What was it like to visit the Pyramids or the Taj Mahal at the beginning of the twentieth century? Fred Christensen will use his collection of vintage Baedeker guidebooks to give us a tour of the more exotic parts of the world, taking a "then and now" approach to all. We'll visit the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Czarist Russia, Egypt, Ottoman Palestine, British India, and that most exotic of lands, the United States in 1909.
About the Presenter: Fred Christensen, a former history instructor at the University of Kentucky and Assistant Professor of Military Science at the University of Illinois, teaches adult-education classes in History and related fields for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at University of Illinois and for the other venues including "Tuesdays at Ten."
