What is the lyric essay, and why might you want to write one?
We’ll approach these burning questions by looking at some examples, and trying out a targeted writing exercise or two to get you started on a lyric essay of your own.
About the instructor:
Amy Hassinger’s most recent novel, The Evolution of E., is seeking a publisher, while her first three novels (Nina: Adolescence, The Priest’s Madonna, and After the Dam) are all grown up, living independent lives in English, Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Indonesian, and French. Her latest project, a book of creative nonfiction tentatively titled They Could Sing, is in search of itself. She’s published essays in places like The New York Times, Creative Nonfiction, and The Los Angeles Review of Books. She grew up in Massachusetts, earned her B.A. in NYC, her M.F.A. in Iowa City, and lives now in Urbana, Illinois, where she teaches creative writing at the University of Illinois, sings in a local band called The Jaybirds, and bothers her children.
